But if your needs are relatively simple and you're looking for an easy-to-use and inexpensive (free!) solution, Renamer4Mac is worth a look. If you need super-high-powered renaming features, then A Better Finder Rename is probably your best bet.
Renamer4Mac has some limitations - you can't, for instance, apply more than one rule in one pass, so if you want to, for instance, replace IMG with Party Pic and renumber the images, you'll have to do it in two steps, and you can't save often-used rules as standards for future use. In the Preferences, you can choose which style of path display you prefer (/new/style or old:style), whether to rename files using the system directly or the Finder (system is much faster, but you'll lose any comments you may have added), and you can enable a contextual menu add-on ("Rename with Renamer4Mac") that makes it really easy to batch rename a selection from the Finder. The interface is quite clean, with a simple toolbar featuring a delete icon, a preferences button, and plus and minus buttons for adding or removing files and folders from the list (you can, for instance, rename files using the same rule even if those files live in different folders). In all cases, you can protect the extension from being modified.

You can certainly rename your files after you load them, but I think it makes sense to do it all automatically at download time.īy the way, if you have different subjects on your card you can download the ones appropriate to the job code you entered initially, then change the job code and download the rest. "Mary's Birthday Party 090405 001.jpg" means a lot more to me than DSC_0359.jpg. Renamer4Mac (formerly Renamer4Mac) makes it realy easy to rename a big number of files according to a preset pattern. I find that naming the files with some name that describes the subject of the photo helps immensely when looking for a photo. I have mine set up to name my files, and store them in subdirectories of my main picture directory by /Year/Job Code/RAW (or /JPG, as appropriate). That's a text string which you can use to name your files. You can set the program so that when you download a memory card, the program comes up and asks for a job code.
